Office Chair Repair: A Guide to Gas Lift, Mesh and Mechanism Replacement
Office chair repair guide: gas lift replacement, mesh renewal, tilt mechanism, casters and base. Learn when to repair or replace and ask our workshop.

Office chair repair is often faster and more economical than buying a new chair. A seat that sinks on its own, a sagging mesh back or a tilt mechanism that will not lock does not mean the chair has reached the end of its life. In this guide we explain the failures we see most often in our workshop and what our mesh chair repair service can do.
When does office chair repair make sense?
Office chair repair usually makes sense when the frame, seat pan and backrest structure are still sound. Gas lifts, casters, armrests, bases, mesh and mechanisms are commonly made in widely used sizes, so they can be replaced. Renewing only the worn part restores most of the comfort and keeps a whole office looking consistent.
The most common office chair failures
The failures we see most in technical service are a sinking seat, torn or loose mesh, a tilt mechanism that will not lock, worn casters, broken armrests and a cracked star base. Most of these are solved by replacing a single component; replacing the whole chair is rarely necessary.
The seat sinks: gas lift (gas cylinder)
If the seat slowly drops while you sit, or will not rise at all, the gas lift is almost always leaking. Gas lifts are pressurised cylinders; they are replaced, not repaired. Class 3 and Class 4 are the classes most commonly used (DIN 4550 / EN 16955 classification), with Class 4 being the higher-load, more durable class.
Torn or loose mesh
The mesh on a backrest can lose tension over time or tear from a sharp object or a bag hung on the chair. A mesh replacement is possible as long as the frame is intact. How the mesh is attached (a groove, stitching or a retaining strip) determines the work involved.
The mechanism will not lock or squeaks
If the backrest will not lock, the lever turns freely or every movement creaks, the chair needs a mechanism repair. Sometimes only a tension spring or lever is changed; sometimes the whole mechanism is replaced.
Casters that stick or mark the floor
Hair and dust in the caster housing make rolling difficult, and worn casters can mark wooden floors. Casters simply pull out and are replaced with a type suited to your floor.
Wobbly or broken armrests
Loose screws can be tightened; a broken armrest is replaced with a compatible spare.
A cracked star base
A cracked base is a safety risk; replace it without delay.
Symptom, likely cause and solution
This table helps you recognise an office chair fault from its symptom. It summarises the typical cases we see in our workshop. For an accurate diagnosis, a photo or short video of the chair is enough; together we identify the part size and a compatible spare part before any work starts.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Seat sinks on its own | Gas lift leaking | Gas lift replacement |
| Mesh back sags | Mesh has lost tension | Mesh renewal |
| Tear in the mesh | Impact, sharp object, abrasion | Mesh replacement |
| Backrest will not lock | Tilt mechanism or lever fault | Mechanism repair or replacement |
| Creaks with every move | Loose joints, dry mechanism | Check fixings, service, replace mechanism if needed |
| Caster sticks or marks floor | Dirt or wear | Clean or replace casters |
| Armrest wobbles | Loose screw or broken mount | Tighten or replace the armrest |
| Crack in the base | Material fatigue, impact | Base replacement (immediately) |
| Seat feels flat and hard | Foam has worn out | Foam and upholstery renewal |
How is a gas lift replaced?
An office chair gas lift is replaced by separating the old cylinder from the mechanism and the base, then fitting a new one. Old cylinders often sit very tight and may need a special tool. The new gas lift must match the chair in length and class, otherwise seat height range and ergonomics suffer.
Never open, drill or heat a gas cylinder. The new gas lift should let your feet rest flat with knees at roughly 90°. Prefer not to do it yourself? See our chair repair page.
Mesh chair mesh replacement: when and how?
Mesh replacement is done when the back or seat mesh is torn or has lost tension and sags. If the frame is not broken, the old mesh is removed and new mesh cut to size is stretched and fixed to the frame. Correct tension keeps the back supported and preserves the breathable feel of the mesh.
We renew mesh using the same method as in production. Considering a new chair instead? Browse our mesh work chairs.
Repair or replace?
Repair when the main body, back frame and seat structure are sound; replace when the frame is cracked, a weld has separated or several major parts have failed at once. Weigh the number of faulty parts, the chair's overall condition and how well it matches the other chairs in your office.
- Repair if a single part such as the gas lift, casters, armrest, base, mesh or foam is the problem.
- Replace if the back or seat frame is broken, or several parts have worn out together.

How office chair repair works in our workshop
Repair in our workshop starts with a quick assessment: you send a photo or video of the chair on WhatsApp, and we identify the faulty part and a compatible spare. We then share the price as a quote. Once you approve, the part is replaced and the chair is checked before it goes back to you.
At FK Mesh Chairs, alongside manufacturing mesh office chairs in our Güngören, Istanbul workshop, we offer mesh chair repair, conference chair repair and spare parts. Our spares include bases, casters, gas lifts, foam, mesh renewal, armrests and writing tablet mechanisms.
Maintenance tips to extend chair life
Small, regular care is the easiest way to make an office chair last. Cleaning casters every few months, tightening loose screws, never standing on the chair and not hanging heavy bags on the back prevent most failures. Wiping the mesh with a soft brush or a slightly damp cloth is all it needs.
Contact us for repair and spare parts
Let us look at your chair together. Send a photo or video on WhatsApp and we will identify the right part and labour, then send you a quote. Batch repairs for a whole office can be planned the same way.

Frequently asked questions
No. A gas lift is a pressurised cylinder, so it is replaced rather than repaired. Fitting a new one of the right length and class restores the height adjustment.
Yes. If the back frame is intact, the old mesh is removed and new mesh is fixed to the frame at the correct tension. If the frame is cracked, its condition is assessed first.
First check whether the lever is turning freely. If the problem continues, the mechanism needs repair or replacement; we can do a first assessment from a photo.
If the frame is sound and only one part has failed, repair is usually the better choice. If the frame is broken or several major parts are worn, a new chair may make more sense.
Yes. For bases, casters, gas lifts, foam, mesh renewal, armrests and writing tablet mechanisms, contact us on WhatsApp or through the quote form.
Prices depend on the fault and the part, so we work on a quote basis. Send a photo or video of the chair on WhatsApp and we will send you a quote.
